Burgundy, land of Chardonnay - Terroir, freshness and balance
Burgundy is perhaps today the most renowned region in the world for its white wines .
Its appellations radiate far beyond the French borders and impress with their regularity, precision and ability to stand the test of time: Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, Chablis .
These names evoke dreams, but they only tell part of the story.
Because behind the renown of the appellations lies a deeper reality: that of the terroir .
Chardonnay, a universal grape variety
Chardonnay is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world.
Today there are approximately 210,000 hectares of Chardonnay on the planet , of which 15,000 hectares are in Burgundy alone .
A grape variety found on all continents.
A grape variety that we have had the chance to discover and taste in many countries, including South Africa , Australia and the United States .
Yes, there are some very great Chardonnays all over the world.
We remember, for example, a bottle of Hamilton Russell Chardonnay in South Africa.
A great wine, without a doubt.
An exceptional nose.
A rich, buttery attack on the palate, just the way we like it.
But in the final, something was missing.
That sensation that awakens the palate.
This freshness, this tension.
In other words: acidity .
Why Burgundy remains the benchmark
If Burgundy is considered the master of Chardonnay, it is not solely for its winemaking expertise.
Great winemakers can travel, learn, and settle elsewhere.
But the land itself does not travel .
Vines can be uprooted and replanted elsewhere — as has been done, for example, with Bordeaux vines exported to China.
But the land remains unchanged.
And the one from Burgundy is unique.
The soil is predominantly clay-limestone , with a limestone geology dating back to the Jurassic period.
It is this composition that allows the Chardonnay to express what we are so looking for:
a natural balance between fat and tension , between richness and freshness.
The soil came before man
We often talk about great winemakers, signature wines, names that make us dream.
But sometimes we forget the essentials.
The soil nourishes the vine.
It structures the wine.
It provides the framework within which man can then express himself.
Burgundy is unique because of its terroir,
and it is enhanced by the men who work on it with precision, patience and humility.
Our vision of white Burgundy
If you would like to discover a white Burgundy which, for us, perfectly embodies what a great wine from this region is, we recommend our Haute-Côte de Beaune Raphaël & Sébastien – Blanc .
A wine made by us, true to our vision of Burgundian Chardonnay:
-
a bold and generous attack,
-
a finish characterized by a just and precise acidity .
-
a balance that makes you want to have seconds.
A wine that is legible, elegant, and deeply rooted in its terroir.
A story of taste… and wine
Wine is a matter of taste.
But taste remains a matter of wine.
And in Burgundy, more than anywhere else, this story begins beneath our feet.
